Week 15, January 1/12/2008 [Back to Top]

    Dear Parents,

Please forward the weekly E-news to your class parents.

    **Year end potluck/gathering**

We understand some classes would celebrate end of the Spring Semester with a potluck or gathering. Please remind all parents to have food and drinks OUTSIDE the classroom. For Sierramont classes, DO NOT set up food and drinks inside the building. Set it up outside the building instead. Chinese food has a lingering flavor that would not be appreciated by the day school staff/students when they resume classes on Monday.

    Community News:

Most of you might be aware of Irish Chang, the author of "Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II". She was fearful that this incident will become a *forgotten holocaust*, and set out and wrote this book which was published in 1997. Irish Chang subsequently committed suicide partly because of depression resulting from researching materials for this book. A full length documentary (not based on her book) is available in San Jose this week. We would like you to be aware of this opportunity to view this film. Please note that the film is rated "R".

    Here is the info:

Synopsis: Documentary set during the Japanese invasion of Nanking , China in the early days of World War II, focusing on the efforts of a small group of unarmed Westerners who established a Safety Zone where over 200,000 Chinese found refuge. The events are told through interviews with Chinese survivors, archival footage, and testimonies of Japanese soldiers, interwoven with staged readings of the Westerners' letters and diaries. "This masterful, powerful doc may well rank among the greatest retellings of a historical event put on film." -- Box Office Magazine
